Filtration Equipment

Filtration removes suspended solids from a liquid as it passes through a porous filter medium.

Filtration is a separation method that removes suspended solids from a liquid passing through a filter medium made up of a porous layer which holds the particles back. At this stage every particle has to be retained without causing changes that affect the taste of the wine.

During fermentation and storage, solids drop out as a deposit which traditionally clears over time through natural settling. Filtration removes haze, foreign bodies and the impurities that would otherwise form a deposit in bottled wine.

Properly controlled filtration improves quality, while careless or excessive treatment does the opposite. As with any wine treatment it needs the right care and the right equipment, and the winemaker has to avoid contact with air throughout.
